Distracted Driving Can Impact Your Auto Insurance!

Are you someone who is feeling the pain of increased rates on your auto insurance policy? Distracted driving is a cause for many insurance companies to raise their rates across this board. This means that your premium could go up regardless of whether or not you were involved in a loss.

What exactly is distracted driving? You may be surprised to find out that distracted driving is more than just texting or talking on the phone while driving.

Distracted driving is any activity that could divert your attention away from the main task of driving.

Believe it or not, drivers spend more than half of their time focused on things other than driving(1). Distracted driving includes the following:

  • Dialing or using a smartphone;
  • Texting;
  • Eating or drinking;
  • Talking to passengers;
  • Grooming;
  • Reading;
  • Programming a GPS or navigation system;
  • Adjusting a radio or MP3 player.

Our partner, Travelers Insurance, wrote a lengthy article regarding just how dangerous distracted driving is. We are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash because texting takes our attention away for an average of 4.6 seconds2.

23 times more likely?! That is a statistic that we do not want to see any of our partners fall prey to. So how do you help eliminate the problem of distracted driving?

First, one of the most impactful things that you can do is set a good example. Second, do not allow yourself to talk, text, or eat while you are driving. Put the phone away in a console or purse. Also, eat after your arrive at your destination.
