Why NY Teen Drivers Need Higher New York Auto Insurance Liability

Consider the three following facts published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and then we’ll discuss how they apply to NY teen drivers and your New York auto insurance.

  1. “Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, accounting for more than one in three deaths in this age group.1 In 2005, twelve teens ages 16 to 19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries.”
  2. “Young people ages 15-24 represent only 14% of the U.S. population. However, they account for 30% ($19 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among males and 28% ($7 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among females.”
  3. “The risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16- to 19-year-olds than among any other age group. In fact, per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely than older drivers to crash.”

ny teen drivers auto insuranceAccording to findings within this study if you have teen drivers in your household then you should be very worried.

NY Teen drivers get in accidents and those accidents tend to be bad…

It doesn’t matter if your teen driver is the hall monitor, detention superstar, computer loving nerd or all-state sports hero, he/she is not a good driver because they simply do not have enough experience.

Unfortunately, chaining your children to the house is not an option.

Though I’m sure you’ve considered it at some point…

Similarly, you are not going to be sitting next to them every time they get behind the wheel.

So if you can’t prevent the worst from happening, how do you protect your family if it does?

Max Out your NY auto insurance liability and NY auto insurance no fault coverages on your auto insurance policy.

For most New York insurance carriers $500,000 is the maximum coverage available (a few offer $1,000,000 or more).  It’s prudent with teen drivers in the house to max out auto insurance liability.

Maybe you’re saying to yourself, “Yeah, he recommends so much because it increases the premium.”

For many carriers the difference in insurance premium between $100,000 NY auto insurance liability and $500,000 is very small ~$50 – $100 Now of course that increase is depending on your unique risk so it’s not guaranteed, but the possibility of increasing your coverage for such a small increase in premium is worth looking into…

So maybe now you should be saying to yourself, “Why hasn’t my agent recommended these increased auto insurance limits to protect family?

Good question…
